Frequently asked questions

What should go on a quilt label?

At least the quilt’s name, who made it, and when and where it was finished. Many quilters add who it was made for, the occasion and a short message. See the quilt label sayings page for ideas.

How do I print a label on fabric?

Iron freezer paper to the back of a light cotton, trim it to Letter or A4, and feed it through an inkjet printer. Peel off the paper, heat-set the ink with a dry iron and wash once in cold water before sewing. Pre-treated printable fabric sheets are easier and more washfast.

What size should a quilt label be?

4 × 6 inches is common for bed quilts; 3 × 4 inches suits baby quilts and small wall hangings. Add ¼ to ½ inch on each side if you plan to turn the edges under.
