About Seam & Stitch

Seam & Stitch is a small collection of free calculators for quilting, knitting and crochet.

The tools answer the maths questions that come up in the middle of a project: how much backing fabric to buy, how many strips to cut for binding, how to spread increases evenly across a row, or how many skeins of a different yarn to buy.

How the numbers are worked out

Every calculator explains its formula on the page. Quilting tools use standard rotary-cutting practice (for example ¼ inch seams and about 42 inches of usable width on 44/45 inch quilting cotton). The yarn project chart comes from Lion Brand’s published yardage guide, linked on that page.

Results are estimates. Patterns, fabrics and personal tension vary, so check your pattern and buy a little extra when in doubt.
