Frequently asked questions

What is the usual ratio for picking up stitches?

Along a vertical edge in stockinette, about 3 stitches for every 4 rows, because stitches are wider than rows are tall. In garter stitch, about 1 stitch per garter ridge (every 2 rows). Along a bound-off edge, pick up 1 stitch per stitch.

How do I know how many stitches to pick up?

Use the pattern number if it gives one. Otherwise measure the edge and multiply by your stitch gauge for the band, or use the gauge option below.

What if I need more stitches than rows?

Pick up one in every row, then add the rest with increases spaced evenly on the next row. The increase evenly calculator can space them for you.
