Frequently asked questions

How much bigger than the quilt should batting be?

Usually 3 to 4 inches on every side, the same or slightly less than the backing. Longarm quilters often ask for 4 inches or more, so check with yours.

What are the standard batting package sizes?

Common sizes are crib 45 × 60, twin 72 × 90, full 81 × 96, queen 90 × 108 and king 120 × 120 inches. Brands vary a little, so check the label before you buy.

What if my quilt is bigger than a king batting?

Buy batting by the yard from a wide roll (90, 96 or 120 inches wide), or join two pieces with a zigzag stitch or batting tape.
