Macrame cord calculator

Rule of thumb from macrame suppliers: cord ≈ finished length × 4 (open) to × 6 (dense), doubled when the cord is folded over the dowel. It is an estimate – cut a little extra.

Frequently asked questions

How much macrame cord do I need?

A common rule is about 4 times the finished length per cord for open patterns, 5 times for tighter knots and 6 times for dense or complex knotting, plus any fringe. Cords folded in half over a dowel need twice that length.

Why does dense knotting use more cord?

Square knots and half hitches wrap cords around each other, so each cord travels much further than the finished length. Spiral and half-hitch heavy designs use the most.

Is it better to cut too long?

Yes. A cord that runs short has to be joined, which shows. Leftover cord can be used for fringe, small projects or practice knots.
