Frequently asked questions

How do I work out the size of a cross stitch design?

Divide the number of stitches by the fabric count. A design 140 stitches wide on 14-count Aida is 140 ÷ 14 = 10 inches wide.

What does stitching “over two” mean?

On evenweave and linen each cross covers two threads, so 28-count linen stitched over two gives 14 stitches per inch – the same size as 14-count Aida.

How much extra fabric should I leave?

3 inches (about 7.5 cm) on every side is standard for framing. Use 2 inches for small pieces and 4 or more for large framed pieces or scroll frames.

Is fabric count measured per inch in metric countries too?

Yes. Aida and evenweave counts are threads per inch everywhere, so the calculator keeps the count per inch and converts the result to centimetres.
