Frequently asked questions

How many stitches should I cast on for a scarf?

It depends on your yarn and gauge. A typical scarf is 6 to 9 inches (15 to 23 cm) wide. At 18 stitches per 4 inches, 8 inches is 36 stitches.

How many stitches for a baby blanket?

Baby blankets are often 30 to 36 inches wide. At worsted gauge (about 18 stitches per 4 inches) that is about 135 to 162 stitches. Use a long circular needle and knit back and forth.

What does “a multiple of 4 plus 2” mean?

The stitch pattern repeats every 4 stitches, plus 2 extra for balance or edges. Valid counts are 6, 10, 14 and so on. The calculator picks the valid count closest to your target width.

Where do I get my gauge?

Knit a swatch at least 6 inches square in the stitch you will use, wash and block it, then count the stitches across 4 inches (10 cm) in the middle.
