Frequently asked questions

What is the drop on a quilt?

The drop is how far the quilt hangs over the side of the mattress. 10 to 12 inches covers the mattress edge on most beds. A bedspread that reaches the floor needs about 20 to 24 inches, depending on how tall the bed is.

What is a pillow tuck?

Extra length at the head of the bed that folds under and over the pillows. 10 inches is a common allowance. Leave it out if the quilt stops at the pillows.

Are there standard quilt sizes?

Not really. Mattress sizes are standard, but quilt sizes depend on the drop, the pillow tuck and the height of the mattress. That is why this calculator starts from the mattress.

Should I measure my own mattress?

Yes, if you can. Pillow-top and deep mattresses are taller, so they need a longer drop to cover the sides.
