Frequently asked questions

How many stitches does one skein of floss make?

With 2 strands on 14-count fabric, this calculator estimates roughly 1,800 full crosses per 8 m skein, allowing 50% for tails, travel and waste. Your own stitching may use more or less – count a test area to calibrate.

How long is a skein of embroidery floss?

A standard skein of 6-strand cotton floss (such as DMC) is 8 m (8.7 yd). Split into 2-strand lengths it gives three times that.

How is the estimate worked out?

A full cross covers two diagonals on the front and two short verticals on the back, about (2√2 + 2) ÷ count inches of thread per strand. That is multiplied by strands, stitches and the waste allowance, and divided by the 48 m of single strand in a skein.
