Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between finished and cut size?

The finished size is what shows in the quilt after sewing. The cut size adds a seam allowance on every side: with ¼ inch seams, a 6 inch finished square is cut at 6½ inches.

Why does the calculator show two layouts?

Blocks rarely divide a quilt exactly. You get the nearest layout that is a little smaller and one that is a little larger. Borders are an easy way to make up the difference.

What is sashing?

Strips of fabric sewn between blocks and around them. Enter the finished sashing width, or 0 if the blocks are sewn straight together.
