Frequently asked questions

What size is a crochet baby blanket?

Usually 30 × 30 to 36 × 36 inches for a regular baby blanket, and around 12 × 12 inches for a lovey. Sizes vary between patterns and countries.

How many chains do I need for a blanket?

Multiply the width you want by your stitches per inch, round to fit the stitch pattern’s repeat, then add the turning chain: 1 for single crochet, 2 for half double, 3 for double and 4 for treble (US terms).

Does the turning chain count as a stitch?

This calculator assumes it does not. If your pattern counts the ch-3 of a double crochet row as the first stitch, chain one less.

Why does my blanket come out narrower than planned?

The foundation chain is often tighter than the rows above it. Use a hook one size larger for the chain, or use a foundation single crochet.
