Frequently asked questions

What if my gauge does not match the pattern?

You can change needle size until it matches, or keep your fabric and re-count. This calculator scales the stitch or row count by your gauge divided by the pattern gauge, so the finished size stays the same.

How do I substitute yarn?

Use the total length, not the number of skeins or the weight. Multiply the pattern’s skeins by the length per skein, then divide by the length of your skein and round up.

How much extra yarn should I buy?

10% is a common safety margin. Add more if your gauge is tighter than the pattern’s, if you plan to make the item longer, or if dye lots may run out.

Should I measure gauge over 4 inches or 10 cm?

Either is fine as long as the pattern gauge and your gauge are measured over the same width. Always measure after washing and blocking your swatch.
