Frequently asked questions

How does the pattern maker work?

Your picture is shrunk to the grid size you choose by averaging the colour inside each cell. The cell colours are then grouped into the number of colours you ask for, using k-means clustering in a perceptual colour space, and each group becomes one palette colour with its own symbol. The same picture and settings always give the same result.

Is my picture uploaded anywhere?

No. The picture is read and processed entirely in your browser on your own device. It is never sent to a server, and nothing is stored once you close the page.

How many colours should I choose?

Simple graphics and logos look right with 2 to 8. Photos usually need 12 to 25 to keep faces and shading believable, but every extra colour means another thread or yarn to buy and another symbol to follow. Start low and add colours until the picture reads well. Crop in tight on the subject before you load it: small details disappear on a coarse grid.

Do the colours match DMC or other thread brands?

No. The colours are averages taken from your picture and are not matched to any thread or yarn brand. Compare the swatches and hex codes with your floss or yarn cards and pick the nearest shade for each symbol.
